Artist Statement

My artwork explores connections and memories. I express these themes in a number of ways such as landscape work that investigates connections to familiar places and the memories of time spent there with loved ones. Through portraiture mainly of family members capturing a moment in time and place. Also, I enjoy creating automatic artworks as a means of relaxation and self–expression.

Well-being is another important part of my practice. Creating work for my own well-being but also learning art techniques that I can share with others.

The media I use is mainly painting, print, collage and mixed media. Mixed media is my preferred choice at present as I feel it gives the work greater dimension and areas of interest. I also like to play and experiment with different techniques and processes.

My main inspiration are artists that focus on similar themes to myself.  Artists that investigate family life and memories. I enjoy looking at a variety of different artists from different genres to view various expressions on the same themes.

At present I am working on a body of work that relates to home, family and memories.  The focus for this will be good things about home and family.

FLYWAY EXHIBITION August 2021

The FLYWAY exhibition was an international exhibition on mental health and the arts, organised and curated jointly by Artlink Central and Chinese health and wellbeing charity A Perch for the Thorn Birds. Funded by the British Council.

The exhibition and programme was about using arts to promote mental health and wellbeing, featuring work by Scottish and Chinese artists. The programme was organised jointly by A Perch for Thorn Birds(刺鸟栖息地)and Artlink Central(艺术共链·中央区), non-profit organisations in China and Scotland, and funded by the British Council. Submissions were open to professional and amateur artists and work was encouraged from people with lived experience of mental health.

I submitted work and 5 of my pieces were accepted for this exhibition which was on display in China and Forth Valley Royal Hospital.  I was also asked to speak at the opening of this exhibition on my lived experience as a carer and mother of children with mental health issues.

The work I submitted was 4 pieces from my degree body of work which are portraits of my four daughters and my 5th piece was of myself and displays my emotions of how I have felt at times over the years looking after children with ill health.
