"Every portrait is like a love affair", Maggi Hambling

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

I recently watched a YouTube video about the artist Maggi Hambling. I find her work fascinating. She uses vivid almost wild brushstrokes and this makes her paintings in my opinion come alive.

She talks about painting a portrait is like having a love affair because it is a very intimate thing to do. She certainly captures an essence of the people she has painted.

It is interesting to hear that she sometimes does not know when a piece is finished and that a painting may come alive or die many times depending on your brushrokes.

She also talks about living in a state of self-doubt and that she paints in the hope to get better. It is encouraging to hear this that your not alone in those thoughts as I believe these are the same demons that most artists battle with.

I particularly like her water paintings as she manages to capture the power of the water and the movement it creates in her work.

Wall of water II, 2011, Oil on Canvas

This painting above is beautiful, yet also a little bit terrifying as is looks almost as if you are about to become engulfed by and enormous wave.
