Outsider Art

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

So today I watched a really interesting BBC Arts Documentary on YouTube hosted by Alan Yentob from their Imagine Series called Turning the Art World Inside Out.

It was basically about artists from around the world who are considered 'Outside Artists' (as previously considered so by the art world) as they have not studied art and are not creating it in a conventional way. Most of them have some form of disability or mental health issue and are working from a variety of locations such as hospitals or centres for those with these particular issues.

I found this programme inspiring and fascinating seeing the imagination used to create the art works produced and the variety of styles of work that was shown.

It also got me thinking about the wonderful freedom they have in their practice. It is in some ways quite childlike. As the artist, Pablo Picasso says "every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up". This is something some of us as artist's struggle with and that element of being fearless and creating works as if like a carefree child.
