This week I began a portraiture sketchbook. I am fairly new to portraiture as previously my focus has been on the landscape and I would say I am more comfortable drawing and painting that. However, during lockdown I did some portrait drawings as part of the time capsule project and quite enjoyed it.
Family is very important to me so the theme for the sketchbook will be family. My family is expanding as in this past year and a half two of my four daughters have married so I now have two lovely son-in-laws and I have also become a nana to two gorgeous twin boys.
I have decided to paint my youngest first and found a photo she took on instagram. In the photo she is listening to music. I painted it using watercolour and added some coloured pencils to certain areas. I'm calling this piece 'The Joy of Music' as she is listening to music and looks so happy. Simple things can so often bring so much pleasure and joy.
This is how I began i drew in the first lines with pencil, then did a quick wash of colour. I then realised the hand looked out of proportion as it was way too small, so I fixed it.
More layers. I fixed the hand and it looks a bit better.
I'm almost there with the portrait. It just needs a few more layers and then I think i will be finished.
I added light and dark areas to finish off and to bring the piece to life. I'm quite happy with how this turned out and actually really surprised that I created it!!
